This article analyzes the disputes over the meaning of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics in public opinion based on the quantification of media discourses collected before, during and after the event. The initial part of this article reconstitutes the ambience and the news on the preparations to argue that, despite the Olympics’ over-scale projection, the media-granted local protagonism of politicians and city authorities is linked to the organizational debate around the execution schedule of infrastructure works required by the City Council. Following, we argue that the opening of the games moves the focus of both the media and research institutes to the competition per se, changing the assessment of the general population with regard to the reception and value of the international event. Lastly, the article summarizes the statistical value indicators collected from the selected news agencies in a systematization proposed by the authors that gauges the articles associated with the 31st edition of the Summer Olympics as “neutral”, “positive” or “negative”.
