Social representations of etnhics, race and disabilities in Parapan American Games Rio 2007

Abstract

This study seeks to investigate how social representations of ethnicity, race and disability at the Rio 2007 Parapan American Games, broadcast by Paralympic Brazil Digital Magazine, recorded by the Brazilian Paralympic Committee. For this purpose, seven editions of Paralympic Brazil Digital Magazine, from June/July 2006 to January/February 2008, were submitted to thematic analysis of the content. It became evident that, although there are representations about Brazil as a country of diversity, as social inequalities allowed by hegemonic and hierarchical forms of exposure and subjectivity, they are intertwined in their contexts and socio-cultural groups, including in Paralympic Sport. In this sense, it is important to reflect and debate about the structures and their institutional powers so that they can combat racism in all spheres of society.
