Surfing and Racism: From the colonial period, through Hollywood, to the voices of brazilian surfers

Faced with several cases of racism that have been accumulating throughout history, inside and outside the sport, this article aims to present the point of view of some Brazilian surfing athletes, regarding their experiences as black surfers. The text approaches the concept of racism in the light of intellectuals who focus on the subject in order to propose a critical discussion, in order to establish a dialogue between the history of surfing, the interviewees' speeches and academic theory. For the present work, in addition to the review of consolidated theories about racism and its structure in Brazil, the method of biographical narratives was used in which participants are interviewed and invited to talk about racism in surfing throughout their trajectories in the sport.
