From "empty hands" to "hands with gloves": A sociological analysis on Karate and Olympic Games

Abstract

When a sociological perspective is aimed at sports organizations in a general sense, it is possible to find, in a complex scenario, power disputes that condition the future of their agents (athletes, coaches, managers, presidents, among others). Aiming to investigate how these power struggles behave and establish connections historically, we use official documents and secondary sources to discuss, with Pierre Bourdieu and other thinkers, the presentation of how the sport field is built where Karate, as a sport, fits with the conditioning factors for its entry into the official modalities of the International Olympic Committee. As a result of the research, it was noted that the entry of Karate into the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was characterized by various structural changes to suit the moral, ethical and safety precepts of the Modern Olympic Movement.

Marcelo Alberto de Oliveira, University of São Paulo - USP

Master's degree in Physical Education and Sports from the University of São Paulo (USP); Graduated in Physical Education from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR); researcher of the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq); Former Japanese government grant recipient - International Development through Sport (IDS) at the Tsukuba Summer Institute (TSI) of the University of Tsukuba (Japan); member of the PULA Study Group and the Group of Olympic Studies (GEO), both linked to the Center for Sociocultural Studies of the Human Movement (CESC) of the School of Physical Education and Sport (EEFE) of USP; member of the Brazilian College of Sports Sciences (CBCE); his main fields of research enter Philosophy, History, Psychology and Sociology, all focusing on Sport; his main research object is Karate-DŠin Brazil.

Tiago Oviedo Frosi, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS

Ricardo João Sonoda Nunes, Federal University of Paraná - UFPR

He holds a PhD in Sociology from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) and holds a Master's Degree in Physical Education from the same institution. He is currently a professor at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), Marketing Director of the Latin American Association of Sociocultural Studies of Sport (ALESDE), Secretary General of the Latin American Association of Sports Management (ALGEDE) and Scientific Coordinator of the Sports Management area of ​​the Latin American Association of Sports Sports Science, Physical Education and Dance (ALCIDED). He is a researcher at the Center for Research in Sports, Leisure and Society of UFPR and in the Processes Civilizadores Group of the State University of Londrina (UEL), both registered at CNPq. He is a member of the Brazilian College of Sports Sciences (CBCE), the North American Society for Sociology of Sport / NASSS, the International Sociology of Sport Association / ISSA, the International Martial Arts and Combat Sports Scientific Society / IMACSSS and the Brazilian Management Association of the Sport / ABRAGESP. He has experience in the areas of Sports and Leisure acting mainly in the themes Public Sports and Leisure Policies, Sports Management and Management, Project and Event Management, Fundraising, Innovation and Physical Education Fights. Graduated in Bachelor's and PhD in Physical Education from the Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP / BAURU - (2003), graduated in Pedagogy from the University Nove de Julho (2008), Specialization in School Sport from the University of Brasília - Unb (2007) , Master's Degree in Sociology from the Federal University of Paraná - UFPR (2007), PhD in Motor Science from Universidade Estadual Paulista UNESP Rio Claro (2016). He is currently a lecturer at the Department of Physical Education at UNIBRASIL Centro Universitário and Universidade Positivo (UP), Curitiba PR. Carlos Alberto Bueno dos Reis Júnior, Federal University of Paraná - UFPR

Master's degree in Physical Education at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), in the research line Sport, Leisure and Society. Bachelor in Physical Education by UFPR. He has a Bachelor's degree in China, through the Science without Borders Program (CAPES) in Mandarin Language and Humanities, Normal University of Central China (08/2014 to 07/2015), and in Martial Arts and Traditional Chinese Body Practices, by Sports University of Beijing (08/2015 to 07/2016). Member of the Center for Research in Sports, Leisure and Society (CEPELS). Researcher in the areas of History and Sociology of Sport, having as objects of study the phenomenon of sportivization, as well as fights, martial arts and sports combat modalities. It devotes special attention to the historical processes of reorganization and sportification of Chinese autochthonous corporal practices.
